What is the role of a Reading Coach?

Your role as a reading coach is to review the students’ understanding and confidence in applying the reading skills taught in a specific lesson.  The Reading Coach acts in the role of a mentor to the student, providing validation of the student’s effort and expressing confidence that the student making progress in becoming a Super-Reader.

The Reading Coach observes the group while students are engaged in their lesson assignments, Generally, the reading coach will monitors the level of student engagement from a distance and approach any student showing signs of disengagement or experiencing a technical problem.

A reaching coach session is commonly scheduled for every two days or twice per week.  The coaching session can vary significantly based on the lesson content and the number of lessons being covered in the session.

Does the Reading Coach act as the teacher?

The Reading Coach’s role is as a facilitator in providing human feedback critical to young students.  The reading coach complements the teaching instructions in the recorded lesson. As a reading coach, you can resolve any confusion in the student’s understanding of the directions provided in the recorded lesson.  You can determine the best way to provide an understanding to the student.  You may repeat the prompt from the recorded lesson or you could replay a specific part of a lesson to address help a student read a word or phrase. If the student is not able to read the content and notations in the lesson, you can replay the lesson segment where the teacher explains the strategy and the reading skills being taught.

How much preparation is necessary to be an effective Reading Coach for a specific lesson?

A Reading Coach must be familiar with the lesson content, the types of questions asked, and the answers to those questions. You will receive teacher versions of the workbooks that provide the correct answers, including example sentences in those lessons that have a writing component.

How do you provide training to a new reading coach?
Each reading course has a separate teacher guide and a training course containing the information on how to conduct the coaching session and examples of actual reading coach sessions. This training course includes the
same content presented to students plus the key points in what a reading coach should address.  We spend time in the mentorship role as well as how to provide the encouragement and validation of the student’s efforts.
